The material choices for the Gentleman Ghost's protrait in particular communicate a historical narrative. the time line of the boarding house correlated with the common experience of veterans of the second world war, who came home to the g.i. bill. the portrait includes a wool sailors jacket, an elbow patched cordorory jacket reflecting a collegiate uniform, a grey flannel suit jacket in reference to the Sloan Wilson novel, a denim jacket, and finally a seersucker jacket a staple of southern menswear.
all of the materials put together tell the story of my gentleman ghost so you get a sense of who he was, and his life story. he and miss pate are positioned on the wall together also making note of the Grays who started the business and ran the boarding house, and lived in the ghost room as a young couple.
